Chimi Lhakhang, the temple of fertility was built in 1499 by Lama (saint) Ngawang Chogyel dedicating to the maverick Saint Lam Drukpa Kuenley, commonly known as “The Divine Mad Man”. The temple is located about 30 minutes hike from the main motor road, walking between the valley of Mesina Village engulfed with paddy field and houses with the painting of Phallus.
The legend says, a Buddhist Master, Drukpa Kuenley, also known for his super natural Powers, subdued a demoness disguised as a Dog and buried under a black stupa that he built near that very location where now the temple stands, and made her the protective deity of the area.
The temple is also well known for the blessing of fertility. Dressed in rags, stinking of alcohols, the foul mouthed figure, Lama Drukpa Kuenley preached Buddhism in very different ways.Unlike other saint, the Divine Madman preached Buddhism using Humour, Music and Sex. For this reason, one will encounter various houses of Bhutan with paintings of Phallus or sculpture.
